Scripture: Ephesians 5:22-33
Intro
The world just does not understand love or marriage and how to make them work. The best place to find real answers is God’s Word. We are not finding 2000 year old, out of date, historically wrong advice. We are hearing from God who is the very definition of love and God who came up with marriage in the first place. He knows how it’s supposed to work. It’s not a mystery for Him at all.
God created us in His image and for His glory. In our marriages, we are called to glorify God and to demonstrate His character and His love. This is a tall order without the Holy Spirit at work in our lives. This morning we are going to see what God’s Word says about the great mystery revealed in marriage. I’ll give you a hint: It’s the Gospel!
Wives
v 22 Submit to husband as to the Lord.
v. 24 Submit in everything to your husband, as church submits to Christ
v. 31 Two become one flesh
v 33 Respect your husband.
Husbands
v 25 Love your wife as Christ loved church and gave himself up for her
Christ:
- Sanctify her
- Cleansed her
- Present church to himself holy and without blemish
v 28 Love your wife as your own body
v 29 Nourish and cherish wife as Christ does for church
v 30 we are members of His body
v 31 Leave father and mother and hold fast – two become one flesh
v 33 Love your wife as yourself
Mystery of Marriage
v 32 Profound mystery – Marriage refers to Christ and the church
