Love one another

Peter’s plea with believers is to keep loving each other – earnestly. Why is that so important? Let’s see what God’s Word says. I will talk about the three “one anothers” found in these verses: Love, Show Hospitality, Serve. And finally Glorify God in everything.

Scripture: 1 Peter 4:7-11

End is Near (v. 7)

  • Self-controlled
  • Sober-minded
  • Our prayers reflect God’s truth

Love One Another (v. 8)

  • Above all
  • New Commandment
  • People will know you are Jesus’ disciples
  • Love covers sin
  • Showing God’s mercy & grace
  • 59 “one anothers”

Show Hospitality to One Another (v. 9)

  • Without grumbling
  • Love in action!

Serve One Another (vv. 10-11)

  • Diakonéo = deacon
  • Spiritual gifts from God
  • Words from God

Glorify God (v. 11)

Acknowledge God’s greatness and give Him honor by praising and worshiping Him.

Love is doing what will enthrall the beloved with the greatest and longest joy. What will enthrall the beloved this way is the glory of God. Love means doing all we can, at whatever cost to ourselves, to help people be enthralled with the glory of God. When they are, they are satisfied and God is glorified. Therefore loving people and glorifying God are one.

– John Piper

Take Aways

Believers, does your life show self-control and clear thinking when it comes to obedience to God’s Word?

Are you truly seeking to love your Christian brothers and sisters in word and action?

Are you quickly and easily offended by others?

Would your family characterize you as hospitable and ready to open your home to care for others?

Do you know what your spiritual gifts are? Do you use them to benefit others in the church family?

Does your life – your words and your actions point people to God and His glory or yourself?
