Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:18-2:5

Series

Paul wrote to the church in Corinth about a number of very specific problems they were dealing with and then he gave them rich theology about the resurrection of Jesus Christ and our future resurrection as believers. That’s where the series title “Living in Light of Eternity” come from. With our view of eternity, knowing that our souls will go on forever and ever, knowing that God will judge our behavior, and knowing that His Son Jesus died so that we can spend eternity with God, how should we think, live, and act today?

The city of Corinth was a key seaport city in the trade route throughout the Roman Empire. Like many other wealthy trade cities, it had a reputation for sexual immorality, religious diversity and corruption. Almost two thousand years later, that sound like our culture, doesn’t it? There is nothing new under the sun.

We will hear about the importance of unity, sexual morality, marriage, using our spiritual gifts, and the need for everything to be done in love.

So as we read this letter to another group of Christians in another church from another century, we will look for principles or teachings that may apply to all believers today.

Cultural Script

The world continually seeks wisdom and power, so Paul uses the opposite words foolishness and weakness over twenty times in this passage to get the attention of the people of Corinth. Like people of modern cities, the Corinthians believed if someone was well-educated and had considerable influence over others they must be valuable. What they said and did must be right!
