A New Understanding

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:6-16

Series

Paul wrote to the church in Corinth about a some very specific problems they were dealing with and then he gave them encouraging theology about the resurrection of Jesus Christ and our future resurrection as believers. That’s where the series title “Living in Light of Eternity” comes from. With our view of eternity, knowing that our souls will go on forever and ever, knowing that God will judge our behavior, and knowing that His Son Jesus died so that we can spend eternity with God, how should we think, live, and act today?

As a reminder, the city of Corinth was a key seaport city in the Roman Empire’s trade route. Like many other wealthy crossroads cities, it had a reputation for sexual immorality, religious diversity and corruption. Almost two thousand years later, that sound like our culture, doesn’t it?

Today we will hear more about the importance of unity. And in the future Paul addresses sexual morality, marriage, using our spiritual gifts, and the need for everything to be done in love.

So as we read this letter to another group of Christians in another church from another century, let’s watch for principles or teachings that may apply to us today.

Understanding of this Age

Human limitations to understanding
• Time
• Physical senses
• What others reveal to us

Understanding of God

Limitations removed by God

Corinthians expected God to be like their gods – angry, limited, fickle, uncaring, and unknowable.

A New Understanding

Humanly we cannot know and understand God.

Only through the Holy Spirit can we know God and understand spiritual things.

Ministries of the Holy Spirit
1. The Spirit indwells all believers.
2. The Spirit searches our hearts.
3. The Spirit teaches us.
4. The Spirit matures the believer.

Contrast of natural (unsaved) person and the spiritual (saved) person.

The Holy Spirit’s indwelling all of us and giving us all access to know and understand God is a source of great UNITY.
