Wonderful Counselor

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be on his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6 ESV

Jesus Christ, the Messiah who fulfilled this prophecy, brought hope to all the world as evidenced in these prophetic names.

Jesus is our Wonderful Counselor. A helpful counselor doesn’t tell you what you want to hear, he/she tells you the truth so you can make corrections. Jesus spoke the truth about our need for God and His life-giving direction in our lives. “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” Proverbs 14:12 ESV. We need a Savior to be reconciled to God and Jesus said, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” John 10:10 ESV.

Not only did He bring us salvation and peace with God, but Jesus came as a sympathetic counselor who knows and cares about our condition and our struggles. “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.” Hebrews 4:14 Jesus paid the penalty for our sins, so instead of facing guilt and shame, when we come to God, we receive mercy and we find grace to help us in our time of need.

Jesus experienced the pains and joys of life while He was totally man (still totally God). He is our wonderful counselor. His Word is truth to set us free not appeasement to simply make us feel better.

God bless you and your family during this Advent season.
