Serving with Love

Scripture: John 13:1-20

Series

We are starting a new series for the summer based on Jesus’ final instructions to His disciples. His three year earthly ministry is coming to a close, and He knows that his death, burial, and resurrection are imminent. He wants to prepare His disciples for what is coming next and for how they should continue His ministry.

John 13-17 is like Jesus’ Discipleship 101 class. You know – the basics of being His follower. So if these were the last most important things Jesus wanted to share with his disciples, I think they are worth spending our time reading, studying, and learning from them. Don’t you?

In today’s message from John 13, Jesus sets the standard for serving as a disciple and we will see that it requires lots of humility.

Motivation: LOVE

  • God is sovereign – always in control
  • Jesus thought about His disciples more than Himself
  • Godly love is putting others first; wanting best for them

Example: SERVING

  • Foot washing was cultural
  • Lowest servant’s job
  • Cleansing by Jesus was a symbol of righteousness
  • We can’t clean up our own sin

Requirement: HUMILITY

  • Humility means thinking of yourself less often
  • Knowledge is good but action is even better
  • A disciple humbly recognizes God’s love and serves others

Take Aways

  • How have you responded to God’s love for you?
  • Have you accepted His gift of salvation or have you rejected it like Judas did?
  • Do you humbly love and serve others?
