Love & Respect

In Colossians 3:18-19, God instructs the husband to love his wife and the wife to submit to and respect her husband. This is a command and it is regardless of how they each feel at the moment. Why does God need to make these commands? Because they are not our natural responses to conflict and they are the very things that we long for the most: Love and Respect.

Scripture: Colossians 3:18-19

Dr. Emerson Eggerichs asked 7,000 people the question, “When you are in a conflict with your spouse or significant other, do you feel unloved or disrespected?” 83% of the men said “disrespected” and 72% of the women said “unloved.” Eggerichs believes love is what best motivates a woman and respect is what most powerfully motivates a man. Further research revealed that during marital conflicts a husband most often reacts negatively when feeling disrespected and a wife reacts negatively when feeling unloved.
