Useful Apps for Christians

One of the best thing about the advancement of technology and the internet is the availability of information and resources right at the tip of our fingers. In the past, the information we depended on other people to, hopefully, be able to provide, we can now access as quickly as we can type something into Google. More tools and resources are available to us now than at any time in history!

This is, by no means, a comprehensive list. This is just a list of handy apps that I have used or saw the value in. I have only included apps that will run on iOS or Android platforms. I’m sure apps are available for the other, more obscure, platforms and can easily be found. The vast majority of people use iOS or Android so we will stick with that. So without further ado…

YouVersion Bible App
Available on iOS | Android | Web

This is easily my favorite and most used app. Not only do you have access to hundreds of translations of the Bible but the selection of daily devotionals and Bible reading plans are just amazing! As a church we are also able to use the app to post our services, sermon notes, announcements etc.

Prayer Prompter
Available on iOS | Android

If you are one to get distracted or lose focus while praying (like I am!), Prayer Prompter is the application for you. It prompts topics to pray about (worship, adoration, for your spouse, for yourself, etc.). It gives you passage suggestions to read through and pray back to God. All the translations are in NKJV, but you can add your own.

I won’t lie to you. The interface on this app is U-G-L-Y but it really does the job well!

Prayer Calendar by Voice of the Martyrs
Available on iOS | Android

VotM is one of my favorite organizations and do great work bringing attention to the persecution and struggles of missionaries around the world.

This app helps us remember our persecuted brothers and sisters throughout the world, and alerts users to specific requests daily.

From their website: Christians around the world have one primary request: “Please pray for us!” Support the body of Christ through daily prayer for the persecuted Christian church. This free iOS or Android application will help focus your prayer requests and remind you to pray each day.

Kindle
Available on iOS | Android

This one is an absolute no-brainer! The availability of free and very low cost books able to be downloaded is absolutely astonishing. Jenn and I used to have to wait until we were free enough to go to a Christian bookstore to be able to look around and find interesting books to read. This endeavor generally cost us an entire day and required that we drive to Buffalo or Erie. And if you knew how much I absolutely despise shopping you would know that I didn’t take these trips lightly! 🙂 Now I just turn Jenn loose and she has stocked our digital library with devotionals, biographies of interesting people and many, many books on apologetics. We are both readers so the ability to have our library with us at all times is a priceless feature!

So there you have it. Certainly not an exhaustive list by any means but a good place to start! If you have some suggestions for other apps that people would find useful, please tell us about it in the comments section below!
