Make Time for What is Important to You
The title of this was told to me by a teacher when he was referring to my effort in my academic studies, or should I say my lack of effort. I have never forgotten this important bit of advice especially when I have difficulty motivating myself to accomplish something.
Recently I am familiar with a pastor of a church who was approached by group of missionaries from a religious organization who would like to come into this pastor’s church and share some things that they have been enlightened to. Of course the pastor would not commit and politely brushed them off. A reason was, even though he believed the missionaries were believers in Christ, their doctrine was convincing but very much in error.
A good reason for declining the missionaries offer was that there were too many baby Christians in his church. They would not have understood how much conflict in theology and doctrine there actually was in this presentation. Unfortunately these baby Christians were Christians for a long time but never grew to be trusted to recognize fact from fiction.
A similar thing happened at the church in Galatia, a church that was established by Paul’s teaching on grace had confused it. This confusion was brought on by false teachers advocating grace plus the works of obeying the law are necessary to obtain salvation.
In Galatians 1:6-7 – I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.
Paul was marveled or was shocked that the church succumbed to false teaching.
How could this have happened? Often times it happens because we haven’t taken the time to search the deep truths of our faith by ourselves. We are too busy with life to be good students of God’s word.
Ephesians warns us of the danger of not having a theological clue.
Ephesians 4:14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting
I know in my life, work, and family, household chores, recreations, church responsibilities and daily interruptions, etc… can get in the way of my study. I go back to what that wise teacher said. “You make time for what is important to you.”
